Annmarie Carlson Drake

OSW Board Member-at-Large

I have lived in Roanoke since September of 2021. In 2020 due to Covid, I closed my performing arts school in Mankato, Minnesota, and decided for an early retirement and relocation to a warmer climate. After extensive online research and two trips, I chose Roanoke for its mountains, hiking, mild weather, walkability, arts, and moderate cost of living. I’ve always loved old houses. In Mankato, I owned a 1918 Craftsman Four Square, and was involved with Rethos, a non-profit organization focused on preservation of old buildings and revitalization of historic downtowns. I was delighted to find my 1898 home in Old Southwest, but even more delighted to discover the strong sense of community, friendly neighbors, and many fellow artists living here. I’ve been on the OSW Inc. board as a member-at-large since 2023 and serve on the Historic Preservation, Community Outreach, and Gish House Committees. I also volunteer at our Day Avenue Pocket Park and various neighborhood events. Professionally, I am a choreographer, teacher, and musician. I performed in Europe and the US, and taught in leading schools in Frankfurt (Germany), Graz (Austria) and Minneapolis. When not in Roanoke, I’m off visiting one of my grown children and their families in Italy, the Twin Cities, or Boston. I also on occasion play flauto dolce with Roanoque Baroque and am a member of the local Sons of Norway Blå Fjell (Blue Ridge) lodge. I live with several much-loved pets and enjoy gardening, reading, and county dancing.
