My husband Don and I moved to Roanoke June 16, 2019—just one day after Don retired. We were living in the Richmond area and looking at houses in Roanoke with our son and soon-to-be daughter-in-law, then decided we might as well move out here, too! We searched a number of neighborhoods, but when we saw 402 Day Avenue listed online, we drove down to Roanoke and bought it. The house was move-in ready and provided Don with a woodworking shop where he can pursue his craft of creating one-of-a- kind kitchenware from “retired” urban trees. The house on Day also accomplished our two main goals, living close enough to our son and his wife (and eventually, our first grandchild!) AND walkability to a vibrant downtown. Before coming to Roanoke, I spent 42 wonderful years teaching in Chesterfield County, south of Richmond, Virginia, and knew it would be tough to stop working all at once. Luckily, I found a very fulfilling and interesting part-time job (almost full-time) tutoring students at North Cross School in Roanoke County. And Don has made his woodworking into a small business called The Flawed Log. We are having a great time living in Roanoke making new friends and getting involved with the Old Southwest community, grandparenting, and selectively participating in area arts and craft shows.
