Preservation Award
In Old Southwest we enjoy recognizing the efforts neighbors make to better their home and their neighborhood. We celebrate restoration, responsible maintenance, and sensitivity to the historic qualities that make Old Southwest unique. In 2008, Old Southwest, Inc created a permanent program to provide special recognition for these special properties within our community. These buildings are not only maintained with the highest regard for historic preservation, but they also contribute to the historic significance of the neighborhood.
Preservation Award 2011
Applications for the 2011 Old Southwest Preservation Award will be accepted starting in January. Please email Katharine Gray or write to her at 441 Albemarle Ave SW, Roanoke VA 24016 to receive an application.
Researching the history of your home is a very important part of the process, so please do your homework. Property deed cards from the City of Roanoke real estate office can supply enough information for anyone to get started. Census records are also a great tool. The Virginia Room, located at Roanoke City’s Main Library has a wealth of information and is a great place to visit for additional information on your home. Recently the OSW home files lovingly compiled by neighborhood historian Joel Richert were donated to the Virginia Room and can be a great place to start your research.
The Preservation Award will be available to any property owner whose structure is at least fifty years of age, complies with the guidelines of the Roanoke Architectural Review Board and is selected by the Old Southwest Board of Directors. Please note that, if the property is sold, the new owner must also sign an Award agreement and send that to OSW, Inc. Also, if the property fails to be maintained at the level when awarded, the plaque will be removed and returned to Old Southwest, Inc.
